Brad Pickard’s (B.Env.D.03 / M.Arch.10) approach to practice understands design to be an inclusive act, one that bridges disciplines and builds communities.

A founding member of the Saskatchewan-based design collaborative OPEN, Brad is driven by an engaging and collaborative approach to design. Each facilitated project embraces an approach that fully values social engagement and community need as a means to seek design solutions that impact communities in simple, effective and positive ways.

Having graduated with the 2010 RAIC Student Medal from Dalhousie University’s School of Architecture, his experience in practice and teaching has carried him to communities throughout Canada, UK, and Africa. Brad’s broad background encompasses practice in architecture, landscape, community building and academic instruction. His comprehensive experience includes leading and facilitating numerous community-based and student design/build projects both in Canada and abroad.

Much of this work was executed while a course instructor at Dalhousie University, lecturer at the University of The Gambia/West Africa, and while interning with Dalhousie University’s applied research group: Cities and Environment Unit where he was a team recipient of the 2011 Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) Social Planning Award for Excellence for his contribution to several community design/build projects with First Nations in Saskatchewan. This experience forms the foundation of his approach to practice and frames his contributions to OPEN. In recognition of this work, Brad has been featured in Dalhousie University Alumni & Friends ‘Building a Better World‘ series.

A Registered Architect with the Saskatchewan Association of Architects (SAA), Brad continues to broaden his scope of professional practice through design and architecture with local firm P3A in Regina, Saskatchewan.
